Inspired by the coast, best ways to brighten winter blues, part 3 of 3.

Updated: Feb 21, 2020

Only a few more months of winter.,.. only a few more months without sun. Even though February is the shortest month, it feels like the longest. Winter seems to last forever. There's no denying that it affects our mood. So how do we ever get through this season unscathed?

The coast rescues me from noise, overstimulation and cold blustering -30F days... brrr. Sun and sand may not be at your doorstep right now, but you can create a home that surrounds you with the best of the coast providing you with a sanctuary in the middle of chaos.

This is the third article in a three-part series that uses elements of coastal design - colour, light and life - to brighten up your winter blues.

Plants breathe life and light in every room.

Add spring colours and fresh scents.

I can see these flowers from the kitchen, the front door and the stairs. The Freesia, in the photo, has such a wonderful smell. "Smell is closely associated with memory and emotion." And freesia reminds me of the freedom and joy of summer. https://www.fifthsense.org.uk/psychology-and-smell/

Scent changes our mood and relaxes us.

Another way to stimulate smell is through diffusers. Aroma shifts our mood, relaxes us, and even takes us back to a specific memory. Vitruvi, featured in the photo, is a Canadian company born out of a seaside community, uses all natural products.

Gravid sells Canada's best weighted blanket.

Add spring and summer colours economically.

A more economical way to add bright colour is fruit. Fruit, like lemons, oranges and limes, can be used to brighten your mood then sliced and frozen for future refreshing drinks.

More sleep, more rest, easier to cope.
